As a gambling industry, greyhound racing will always prioritise profit over animal welfare.
There is clear and ongoing evidence of greyhounds being neglected, abused, drugged and live baited. They are treated as commodities and discarded when they no longer make money.
Overbreeding leads to thousands of unwanted puppies and dogs who are euthanased or discarded. For those dogs who survive the industry, many of them will never find a home. Those dogs retained by industry participants are often kept in barren, kennel-like environments with no opportunity to express normal behaviour.
Doping and drugging is rife in the industry with penalties having little or no impact. The horror of living baiting continues.
A national survey conducted by CPG found that greyhounds are still leaving the racing industry in a neglected and stressed condition. This highlights that rather than being part of the family, many dogs do not receive the most basic care, physically or mentally.
Politicians can no longer ignore the public outcry over animal welfare issues both on and off the track. New Zealand, Wales, Scotland and Tasmania are moving closer to implementing bans.
The greyhounds need us to keep spreading the word about their suffering. Always remember your power as a voter, a consumer and a member of the community. Share a social media post, write a letter to your local paper, tell your friends and family why greyhound racing is cruel.
