The reality of NSW greyhound racing

Greyhound Racing NSW has launched a "PR campaign" that is full of misinformation and mistruths. And in at least one case, an outright lie.

Rather than expose the “truth” about greyhound racing, the campaign exposes the dishonesty and immorality that lies at the heart of the industry.

These failings were recognised in the NSW Government inquiry into GRNSW, with the Drake Inquiry identifying “many significant issues relating to GRNSW’s governance, management, welfare and culture“.

The following information corrects GRNSW’s propaganda and reveals the reality of greyhound racing.

Deaths and injuries on lethal tracks

  • 16 dogs died at NSW racing tracks in FY25, 44 died later after being removed from the track with serious injuries.
  • There were a total of 1,153 greyhound deaths in FY25, of these 453 died from injuries and accidents.
  • Since 2017 there have been 589 greyhound racing deaths and 23,240 injuries on NSW tracks.
  • The NSW total injury rate is the 2nd-highest in Australia and 17% higher than the national average.
  • No NSW track meets minimum safety standards despite $30m of taxpayer funding.

The victims of industry greed

  • Greyhound racing is the only “sport” in Australia that euthanases for injuries and requires on-ground freezers for dead bodies.
  • The NSW greyhound racing industry breeds twice as many greyhounds as can be rehomed by its greyhound adoption program (GAP).
  • Overbreeding has led to GRNSW shipping 1,444 greyhounds to the US, Canada and Ireland with no welfare tracking.
  • Many greyhounds are condemned to small, barren kennels for up to 23 1/2 hours a day.

Taxpayer funding and failed regulation

  • GRNSW-commissioned economic reports are based on unaudited data and are “egregiously exaggerated” .
  • GRNSW has been funded with $207m of taxpayer money since FY17.
  • Rather than the 12,000 workers claimed by GRNSW, the ABS census shows 3,137 workers (full and part-time) employed in both the NSW horse and dog racing industries.
  • There were 203 proven charges against 102 GRNSW participants in FY25, spanning animal welfare violations, doping offences, and participant misconduct.
