Paying for a positive image

Greyhound Racing NSW has entered into a partnership with Australian Community Media to publish pro-racing articles.

ACM owns over a hundred mastheads across Australia, including The Canberra Times, The Newcastle Herald, The Examiner and the Illawarra Mercury.

Hundreds of articles written by GRNSW are appearing in ACM publications. A rider appearing at the bottom of the articles admits that: This article was produced as part of an ACM partnership with Greyhound Racing NSW”.

Below is a list that CPG is compiling of these advertorials.

It would be interesting to know how much money GRNSW is spending on this “partnership”. Yet more money diverted from improving track safety. And more spin to distract from the suffering the industry inflicts on greyhounds.

Few, if any, articles critical of the racing industry have been printed by an ACM publication. Click here for more on how the greyhound racing industry “integrates” with pro-racing media.

TAKE ACTION TODAY. Send a letter to the editor of your local Australian Community Media paper. Ask why they are promoting greyhound racing in partnership with GRNSW.

See below for a list of ACM publications and some ideas on what to include in your letter.

Sending a letter to an ACM Editor

ACM publications generally have a Letter to the Editor link at the bottom of their home page. You can also find the Letter to the Editor page by searching for [name of the publication] letter to the editor. This will display a form headed “Have Your Say” which asks for your details and the content of your letter. There is a letter limit of 250 words.

Below are some ideas for what to include in a letter to the editor. Please note that letters have more chance of being printed if they are expressed in your own words.

  • Ask why the publication has entered into a partnership with Greyhound Racing NSW to promote greyhound racing.
  • Include some of the publication articles from the list above.
  • Include the latest number of greyhounds being killed and injured while racing shown here.
  • Mention some of the ongoing animal welfare issues with greyhound racing:
    • The puppies discarded by the industry, 25% in NSW, because they’re not considered competitive.
    • The ongoing unnecessary euthanasia of young, healthy greyhounds who are considered too old or too slow.
    • The inability of the industry to rehome the thousands of dogs they breed every year.
    • The findings by state industry tribunals that doping, abuse and live baiting still occur in some states.
  • Question the funding of the industry by state governments with millions of taxpayer dollars.
  • Ask if the publication is willing to publish articles that highlight the issues with greyhound racing as documented in your letter.
