The greyhound racing industry will go to any lengths to discard the dogs it no longer wants.

Buddy was born and raced in Queensland and then shipped down to South Australia. He raced for less than one year. Once his “career” was over he was placed on Gumtree for free.

A local, well-meaning man responded to the ad. That same day the industry participant dumped the dog at the man’s doorstep, no questions asked. No inspection was done of the house for suitability.

The man who took Buddy in was in fact not in a position to provide adequate care to a dog – he has severe disabilities and struggles to care for himself.

He loved Buddy, and had all the best intentions, however he came to the realisation that he needed to give Buddy up. With the help of his support worker, he put the call out on a local community page to surrender the dog.

A rescue mission

Thankfully Buddy’s post was seen by a caring human, and she immediately went to collect him. While she wasn’t in a position to take in any more animals, she sensed that the situation was fairly dire.

Upon arrival she could see that Buddy’s human and the living conditions were in a horrible state, and the industry participant who dumped the dog at the house would have know this was not a good situation.

In safe hands

Sweet Buddy boy settled in nicely to his foster home, and his friendly, sweet and cuddly personality started to shine through. He showed his enjoyment of simple comforts like good food, soft beds and warm pyjamas 💙

Buddy had obviously experienced food insecurity, so got a little excited at meal times. As with so many greyhounds, this settles with time as they realise they won’t ever miss out again

Due to his previous living situation, Buddy thought it was playtime during night hours and also goes to the toilet inside. Toilet training and daily routine is something that his foster carers worked with him on and he made great progress straightaway.

Despite his young age, and his rocky past, Buddy has a beautiful puppy-like nature and is a very well mannered boy!

Shame on this disgusting industry

Buddy was discarded because he didn’t make money for his owner. He was not desexed and needed to put on weight.

He was dumped on a kind human who was not in a position to care for him and who is now receiving support from local healthcare providers.

Buddy was then rescued and rehabilitated by some of the many carers who are dedicated to the greyhounds the racing industry discards in their thousands every year. They are committed to helping greyhounds become the best version of themselves.

A CPG survey of community-run rescues found that most greyhounds arrive in a state of neglect. Read more
