Stewards’ reports have given a glimpse of the harsh lives of racing greyhounds.
9 March 2024: Richmond Straight NSW Race 9
August Winds – Found to have vomitus in its kennel on being removed for the race. Pre race veterinary examination by the OTV in the presence of the trainer Mr.Callaughan revealed no apparent anomoly. The trainer advised stewards and the OTV this greyhound has behaved similarly previously. The greyhound was deemed fit to start.
8 March 2024 – Goulburn NSW Race 9
Yori Bale – When being retrieved from its kennel prior to the commencement of the race, it was observed the greyhound had blood present within its kennel. As a result, the greyhound underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was deemed suitable for racing with no concerns raised by trainer Gordon Herbet.
7 March 2024 – Dapto NSW Race 11
Hardaway Ranger – Found on being released from its kennel to race that it had vomited in its
kennel. The OTV examined the greyhound in the presence of the trainer Mr.R.Marsden and was subsequently deemed fit to race.
At least the dogs below were excused from running – but they were still brought to the race meeting for racing.
1 March 2024 – Casino NSW
Major Rust – Aaron Newstead
Trainer advised that greyhound was suffering illness and diarrhoea. Trainer directed to present greyhound to local Veterinary Practice for a Veterinary Certificate.
4 March 2024 – Nowra NSW
Talon Tiger – Randall Walter
When being retrieved from its kennel prior to the commencement of the race, it was observed the greyhound had diarrhoea. As a result, the greyhound underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was deemed unsuitable for racing. Stewards, acting on veterinary advice in accordance with GAR76(2) subsequently scratched the greyhound at 9:30pm. A 5-day incapacitation period was issued.
1 March 2024 – Richmond NSW
Trainer Sam Sultana has had ZIPPING MARIO examined by the OTV to verify the scratching where kennel mate ZIPPING KIMBLE was drawn inside. The OTV found the greyhound to have an elevated temperature and was unfit to start and no further action was taken.
