Thirteen greyhounds killed racing in September 2025

The image shows Benny Cool skidding on his back along the wet track and suffering a broken leg at Warragul, Victoria.
Benny Cool was only 20 months old, he was killed by the on-track vet.

Five greyhounds were killed racing in September with Victorian tracks once more proving to be the most deadly in Australia. Two of the five greyhounds simply collapsed after being forced to run, racing to their deaths.

Three year old Mini Whiskey placed first in his trial at Geelong on September 2. The stewards reports state he “collapsed” post trial from a “suspected catastrophic internal bleed”. Greyhound Racing Victoria has ordered a necropsy – will it be made public? Mini Whiskey had last raced in NSW in October 2024 at a trial in Richmond before being passed to a Victorian trainer in May 2025.

Aston Jill was running in race 3 at Warragul, Victoria, on September 4, the lightest greyhound in her race. She was severely checked and fell on the first turn – the race video has not been uploaded. Aston Jill fractured her right radius and ulna. The industry vet killed her shortly after. Stewards inspected the track after the race and “deemed it suitable for racing”. Aston Jill was two years old.

Mccallister, two years old, was running in the “Punters Love Bulli” race at Bulli NSW on 9 September. He collided with another greyhound and fell, suffering excruciating compound fractures of both his forelegs. His fall has been edited out of the race video but CPG has obtained the footage which shows him falling hard onto his front as both his legs snap. Did the punters love watching him fall?  Mccallister was killed by the on track vet soon after.

Heavy rain in the days prior to the September 9 meet at Warragul Victoria meant that stewards had inspected the track before racing commenced. They deemed it “suitable for racing”. Benny Cool was running in race 1 – it was raining, the track was slick and the race caller commented it was “pretty ordinary conditions”. Only a few seconds into the race, three greyhounds fell on the first turn in what  the commentator later called an “incident packed event”. Benny Cool was one of them and he was the favourite to win. Benny Cool can be seen skidding on his back along the sodden track after he fell. He suffered a broken left radius and ulna. The industry vet killed him after this, his third and last race. His “career” had been a mere 12 days. Benny Cool was only 20 months old, just a puppy.

Veteran greyhound Navarino was running in his 96th race at Sale Victoria on September 28. It was a distance race of 640m. He led for most of the race only to be pipped into 2nd place at the finishing post. Navarino collapsed and died in the catching pen seconds after his race. He raced to his death. GRV has ordered a necropsy. Navarino was four years old and had won his connections over $174,000. ( The greyhound who beat him, Lakeview Nola, raced six days later on October 4 and died in the catching pen after falling and sustaining head and spinal injuries.)

The greyhounds who “don’t count” as track deaths

At least a further 8 greyhounds suffered fractured limbs and were subsequently killed in the days following, away from the tracks and away from the scrutiny of “official” track deaths. All were given mandatory 60 or 90 day standdown periods. All are now listed as deceased in the databases.

Three year old Aston Bollinger sustained a hind tarsal fracture/dislocation at Northam WA on September 8. She was given a 90 day standdown period but is now listed as “Retired(deceased)” in Fasttrack.

Versnellen, three, suffered a right hock fracture at Sandown in Victoria on September 11. Despite being given a 90 day standdown period she is now listed in Fasttrack as “Retired(deceased)”.

The next day at Goulburn, NSW, three year old Andrade fractured his “off side leg”. He is now listed as “retired(deceased)”.

On September 17 at Gunnedah NSW, Affluent, three, fractured his off side radius. He had won over $104,000 over his “career”. He was given a 90 day standdown period but is listed as “deceased”.

At Taree, the racing industry’s so-called “safest track” in NSW, two year old Pop’s Big Guy suffered an open radius and ulna fracture in race 11 on September 20. A total of nine greyhounds were injured at the race meet. Pop’s Big Guy is now listed as ‘deceased” despite being given a 90 day standdown period after being “transported to a nearby veterinary hospital”.

On September 21 at Healesville Victoria four year old Fernando Gomez fractured his right hock in race 4. Despite winning over $70,000 over his career, he is now listed as “deceased” in Fasttrack.

And on September 26 at Warragul, Victoria, not one but two greyhounds suffered broken limbs racing and both were given 90 day standdown periods. Ninja Cuddle, two, fractured his right tibia in race 1. Extreme Havoc fractured his right humerus in race 4. It was his second birthday. They are both now listed as “deceased”.
