The 16 greyhounds lost on tracks in October - Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds

As usual, most fatalities were caused by on-track vets delivering euthanasia due to broken legs.

Poor Joey Cortex suffered what must be the most agonising form of fracture, a “compound comminuted” break. A communited fracture is one that breaks in at least three places; more commonly seen in gunshot wounds and traffic incidents … or in greyhound races.

One should also presume that many of these fractures could have been treatable, with the dogs placed on injury recovery schemes. But euthanasia is free – an extra service provided by the lovely greyhound clubs.

Two dogs collapsed and died after running their race, while Boes Reward died from a “cervico-thoracic” injury, which we can call a broken neck.

Note half the dogs were running on NSW tracks, reflecting the horror year for NSW greyhounds. Also note that two other dogs that were seriously injured are now apparently “deceased”; we’re trying to confirm.
