Greyhounds continued to suffer appallingly on Australian racetracks in July 2022.
A massive heart attack. A broken spine. Hind leg paralysis, most likely due to a damaged spine. Multiple fractures in a single leg bone. Several incidents of fractured hocks. A pup who didn’t even survive his first race. All young dogs who deserved to live a long life free from racing.
These are the deaths from greyhound racing in July 2022.
Meeka’s Charm broke her back following a collision on the first turn at Bathurst, NSW on July 4. Her trainer had three other dogs in the race that claimed her life. Meeka’s Charm had won over $37,000 racing in her 2-year career. She was killed by the on-track vet shortly after the race.
The same day at Cannington, WA, Hello I’m Texas collided with another runner coming into the home turn and fractured his right hock. He was euthanised by the on-track vet after his 74th race. He had been racing since he was 17 months old and had won $11,000.
Still at Cannington track, Your Mate collided with another greyhound in the catching pen and suffered multiple right humerus fractures . He was just 2 years old and had been raced up to seven times a month in his short five month career, winning over $28,000. He clearly wasn’t his trainer’s or owner’s mate as he was euthanised by the on track vet.
Back at Bathurst track on July 18, Entrancing fractured two bones in her foreleg and suffered hind leg paralysis following a fall on the home turn. She was euthanised at the track. Entrancing was 23 months old and in her 4th race of the month. She had been raced just three days prior to her 18th and last start. Her career had started at the age of 16 months.
Poor Gnarley Big Head, just a baby at 22 months old, was in his first and last deadly race at Traralgon, Victoria when he collided with another dog on the turn, fell and broke two foreleg bones. He was killed by the on-track vet.
The “soft” track at Gawler in SA proved fatal for Oscar Rose who broke down turning into the home straight with a fractured left hock. He was 2 ½ and running in his 28th and last race.
Little Cometron, 30 months old, suffered an “acute cardiac incident”, collapsed and died on the track at Albion Park in Queensland. She had been raced just three days prior. Literally raced to death.
Cannington track recorded a third death for the month on July 25 when What a Shaker hit the inside rail and fractured his skull. He died on the track, moments later. He had five starts in his short 6-week career and won exactly zero dollars.
The Gardens, Newcastle NSW was the scene of Gort the Gift’s 15th and last race. He fractured his scapula (shoulder) and failed to finish the race. Gort the Gift was killed by the on-track vet. He was not yet three.
Still in NSW, at Kempsey, Privacy Policy collided with another runner and fell at the first turn, fracturing her foreleg in multiple places. She had won a measly $560 in her 11-start career. Privacy Policy was euthanised at the track.
Ten greyhounds killed. Average age 29 months. Killed for a cheap bet.
We will remember them. RIP.
