Image shows Quick Dash, just a puppy at 19 months old. Young and inexperienced, he was “slow to begin” and collided with other dogs. He fell and suffered a fractured leg. Quick Dash was killed by the Geelong on-track vet at the end of his second race.
2025 continued to be a murderous year for greyhounds as ten more were killed trackside in June. At least a further ten were killed away from the tracks following serious but often treatable injuries.
Four greyhounds were killed in one horror day of racing, two in the same race. Victorian tracks claimed the lives of six greyhounds. An eleventh greyhound’s cause of death can only be speculated. Race videos continue to be censored or merely not uploaded, drawing into question the total lack of transparency by racing bodies.
June started badly for two-year-old Tailor’s Chalk at Sale, Victoria. On June 1 he was running in race 9 when he was “severely checked” on the home turn and fell. He can be seen on the race video flipping over helplessly at speed. Mere seconds later in the video there are children seen watching the race from the finishing post. They must have witnessed this horrific fall. Track attendants are seen running toward the stricken greyhound. The race commentator can be heard exclaiming Tailor’s Chalk was “down and out on the turn”. Tailor’s Chalk had fractured not one but both his forelegs. He was killed by the industry vet soon after. The track was inspected by stewards after the race who “deemed it suitable for racing”.
On June 4, Vodka Mother, two, “went amiss” in the back straight during race 6 at Gunnedah, NSW. He “failed to finish”. The race video captures the moment a few seconds into the race where he tries to decelerate, hopping on three legs sideways as he has sustained a compound fracture of his hock and “fibia” (according to the stewards report). The bones of the lower hind are “tibia” and “fibula” so it appears whoever wrote the stewards report was confused. Or ignorant. Or both. No matter, Vodka Mother must have been in agony as compound fractures involve the broken bone piercing through the skin. He was killed by the on-track vet.
Poor Quick Dash, a puppy of just 19 months old, was running in only his second race on June 6 at Geelong, Victoria. He was “severely checked” and fell turning out of the back straight. He had been “very slow to begin” according to the stewards report. Quick Dash was simply young and inexperienced, but nothing ever prepares the greyhounds for the high-speed falls. Quick Dash fractured his right radius and was killed by the on-track vet. Greyhound Racing Victoria has not uploaded the race video.
On June 10 at Mandurah, WA, two-year-old Bakes On Lakes was part of a five-dog collision and he fell and “failed to finish”. The race video shows him falling under another greyhound at speed on the first turn. He suffered an open fracture of his left tibia and was killed by the industry vet. Bakes On Lakes had been forced to race 34 times. At the same race meet another greyhound Fantale Monelli fractured her left ulna in race 6 and was given a 90-day standdown period.
Race 13 proved unlucky for three-year-old Cloudy Wren at Warrnambool Victoria on June 12. She was severely checked and fell turning off the back straight. Her radius and ulna were fractured and she was killed by the on-track vet. Greyhound Racing Victoria has not uploaded the race video. Cloudy Wren had raced 27 times.
Four greyhounds were killed racing on June 16. Two died on Victorian tracks while two were killed in the same race at Queensland’s new track at Ipswich, which cost taxpayers $45 million and has been touted as “world class”.
Two-year-old Miara finished race 1 at Shepparton but was injured in what was coyly described in the stewards report as “an incident in the catching pen”. She suffered severe injuries – a “cervical spine injury with neurological deficits and cardiovascular compromise”. She was killed by the industry vet and later a necropsy was performed. It found that the “likely cause of death was cardiopulmonary compromise from bilateral pneumothorax and haemorrhage”. The only cause of this would have been a penetrating trauma to the chest so it is likely that the “incident” in the catching pen was catastrophic involving fractured bones piercing her lungs and a brain or brain stem injury. Technically speaking the cause of Miara’s death was pentobarbital administered by the on-track vet. It was Miara’s first and only race and Greyhound Racing Victoria has not uploaded the race video.
Saint Jayden, three, fell on the home turn in race 11 at Warrnambool. The stewards report states he “pulled up” but no race video has been uploaded. He had sustained a right radius and ulna fracture. Saint Jayden had been raced 90 times for total prizemoney of $8,765. He was killed by the on-track vet.
Race 1 at Queensland’s brand new, very efficient greyhound killing track The Q was abandoned after two dogs died. Divided By Nine, 22 months, and Texas Wedge, two, both fell on the first turn and both suffered “foreleg” injuries. Both were killed by the industry vet. Divided By Nine and Texas Wedge both died for nothing as no dividends were declared and no prizemoney was awarded for the abandoned race. Racing Queensland has not uploaded the race video. This new track at Purga near Ipswich has killed 10 greyhounds in a very short time.
The next day in Horsham Victoria Talkin’ Bluey, three, was running in race 4 when he fell turning into the home straight. He sustained a right shoulder dislocation and a right radius and ulna fracture. Once again, the race video is “unavailable”. Talkin’ Bluey was killed by the on-track vet after this, his 32nd race.
The greyhounds who "don't count" as track deaths
At least a further ten greyhounds were killed off track in June after suffering racing injuries. All had been given a 60- or 90-day standdown period.
Four-year-old Top Speed Gear fractured his right hock at Ballarat Victoria on June 2 and three days later he was listed in the Fasttrack database as “Retired (deceased)”.
Kingsbrae Kim, three, fractured her hock on June 5 at Casino NSW. On June 12 her status was updated in eTrac as “deceased (euth-inj)”.
On June 6 two-year-old Rainbow Catley suffered a hock dislocation at the Gardens, NSW. Less than two weeks later she was listed in eTrac as “deceased (euth-inj)”.
Two-year-old Paula Keeping fractured her left radius and ulna racing at Northam WA on June 16. Two weeks later her status was updated to “deceased (euth-inj)”.
On June 18 two year old Scoop The Loot suffered an “off side hind injury” in race 5 at Rockhampton track in Queensland. On July 2 he was listed as “deceased(euth-injury)”.
Two-year-old Hessle suffered a cranium (head) injury in race 4 at Townsville on June 24. There is no race video uploaded. On July 17 she was listed in eTrac as “deceased (other)”.
Poor Jumbuk Star, three, fractured her right hind tarsus (hock) during her 53rd race at Warragul, Victoria on June 26. A mere four days later she was listed as “deceased(euth-inj)” in eTrac.
On June 28, while racing at Taree (NSW’s safest track according to Greyhound Racing NSW) Bad Girl Robyn fractured her hock. It was her fourth start. Four days later her status was updated in eTrac to “deceased (euth-inj)”.
On June 28 again, this time on the Meadows track in Victoria, Metaphorical, just a puppy of 22 months and racing in his fourth start too, fractured his right radius and ulna. He was listed as “deceased (euth-inj)” only two days later.
Two days later on June 30 two-year-old Zesty Boy broke multiple bones in his hind leg during race 4 at Shepparton, Victoria. On July 9 his status was updated to “deceased (euth-inj)” in eTrac.
And finally, the curious case of two-year-old London Danger who was listed as “deceased” pre-race in the stewards report for Launceston on June 9 and again in the stewards reports for Hobart on June 12. On June 13 she was listed as “deceased (other)” in eTrac yet listed simply as “retired” in Fasttrack. The true story behind her death will likely never be known.
