The image shows Turbo Tully who suffered a leg injury after being distracted by a bird and colliding with another greyhound. She was killed by the on-track vet at Capalaba. Turbo Tully had already been raced four times in February.
Six greyhounds died racing in February 2026 and while that may not seem to be many, at least 11 more were killed away from the tracks after having suffered fractured legs of one form or another.
Seventeen greyhounds killed as a result of racing in the shortest month. Western Australia and Victoria vyed for the deadliest tracks while Taree, NSW’s supposedly “safest” track killed yet another young greyhound.
With racing suspended at Cannington track following the deaths of 9 greyhounds in just nine weeks, more races were held at Mandurah. And the killing continued.
Veteran greyhound Kingsbrae Extra, four years old, was running in race 10 at Mandurah on February 3 when she had her heels galloped on, fell at the home turn and “failed to finish”. She had dislocated and fractured both her left wrist and hock. The race video has not been uploaded. Kingsbrae Extra, forced to race 81 times, was killed by the industry vet at the track.
The next day, February 4, two year old Delicious ran his heart out to come 5th in race 9 at Ballarat Victoria. Due to high temperatures, the race meet was deemed to be “heat affected”. Delicious was in the wash bay after his race when he dropped dead. A necropsy was ordered. Delicious had been forced to race 60 times in his 13 month career. He was raced to death.
Back at Mandurah on 14 February three year old Surf The Sun collided with three other greyhounds on the first turn. He fell and “failed to finish”. Surf The Sun was the favourite in race 8. He can be seen in the race video where he disappears from view quickly while running at 48km/hr. The commentator can be heard exclaiming “the favourite’s got dragged down”. Poor Surf The Sun had suffered an excruciating open fracture of his radius and ulna. His shattered foreleg would have pierced through his skin. It was his 73rd and last race. After winning his connections over $130,000 there was no love shown for him on Valentines Day and Surf The Sun was killed by the on track vet.
Turbo Tully, not quite three, was racing for the 52nd time on February 18 at Capalaba in Queensland. After being distracted by a bird on the track she was “severely checked, became unbalanced and took no further competitive part” in race 10. She can be seen in the race video veering off course, her tail helicoptering furiously, grimacing in pain as she then gamely hobbles on along the inside rail, her body at a strange angle. Turbo Tully had suffered what the stewards report vaguely describes as an “off side fore” injury. She was killed by the industry vet at the track. Turbo Tully had been raced 4 times in February already. She appears to have been her trainers only actively racing greyhound.
Why Not Harvey, just two years old, was running in his very first race at Warragul, Victoria on February 20. He collided with another greyhound who fell in front of him on the first turn, fell himself and did not finish. In total, three greyhounds fell during the race. The front on race video shows the greyhound in the starting box next to him jumping out of the box at an angle, straight in front of Why Not Harvey, whose career lasted mere seconds. He had suffered a fracture of his right humerus. The on course vet killed Why Not Harvey soon after the race.
Tiny Effie, just 24 months old and only 23 kg, was running in race 2 at Taree NSW on February 22 when another greyhound ran into her hindquarters. She fell on the back straight and her fall has been edited out of the official GRNSW race video. Effie shattered not only her foreleg (an open fracture of the radius and ulna) but also her hindleg (an open comminuted fracture of her tibia). Two catastrophic injuries- testimony to the lethal force exerted on greyhounds’ bodies when they race and fall. Effie was killed by the industry vet soon after this, her second ever race. Taree track is supposedly the safest track in NSW after $6 million was spent on upgrades however it has killed 4 greyhounds since the start of 2025 and is now the deadliest track in the state.
The greyhounds who “don’t count” as track deaths
At least a further 11 greyhounds were killed in the days following race injuries. All 11 were given either a 60 or 90 day standdown period for fractured legs. All 11 were killed away from the tracks and so don’t count toward the “official” track deaths statistics. All 11 are now listed as “retired(deceased)”. Four greyhounds were injured at Rockhampton, and three at the new “state of the art” tracks at Purga. All in Queensland.
Three year old Liar Guy fractured his near side radius and ulna running in his 55th start at Dubbo NSW on February 2. 90 day standdown period. Now dead.
The same day at Ballarat Victoria little Scott Switcheroo, not yet two years old, fractured her left radius running in her 13th race. 90 day standdown period. Now dead.
On February 8 three year old Crazy George fractured his near side hock in race 12 at Q2 parklands Queensland. 90 day standdown period. Now dead. His trainer now has only two greyhounds racing.
Two year old Martian was running in race 9 at Rockhampton on February 11 when he fractured his “right hind”. 60 day standdown period. Now dead. His owner/trainer races greyhounds on an industrial scale in Queensland.
Another greyhound injured on February 11 in Queensland, this time at Q1 Lakeside. Three year old Supreme Choice fractured his right tarsal running in race 7. 90 day standdown period. Now dead.
The next day Mcivor Olly, three, was running in race 9 at Mt Gambier SA. It was his 108th start and the the race was over 512m. Three days previously he had been raced over 595m. He fractured his left femur and was given a 90 day standdown. He is now dead. Greyhounds need at least 5 days to allow their bodies to recover after racing over long distances. In January 2025 Mcivor Olly’s trainer pleaded guilty to using a barking muzzle on a greyhound and was found to have also contravened the code of practice with respect to the housing and cleanliness of his kennels. He was given a slap on the wrist.
The following day, February 13, Bribie Town, not quite three, fractured his off side hock in race 5 at Q1 Lakeside Queensland. 90 day standdown. Now dead.
On February 15 at Rockhampton Queensland two year old Valentia Blue sustained a “right elbow injury” in race 8. She was given a 60 day standdown. She is now dead.
The same day in Sale Victoria 21 month old Aston Tamsyn was trialling following a “fail to chase” penalty when she fractured her right tarsus. 90 day standdown. Now dead. Her owner breeds and owns greyhounds on an industrial scale.
Back at Rockhampton on February 18 not one but two greyhounds suffered fractures racing and were subsequently killed away from the track. Three year old Sweet Lollipop suffered a “right hind injury” in race 8 and in the very next race four year old Farmor Left also suffered a “right hind injury”. Both were given a 90 day standdown. Stewards inspected the track after these two horrific injuries and deemed it suitable to continue racing on. Interestingly 2 days after Farmor Left’s injury his trainer was found guilty as another of his greyhounds returned a positive swab to a permanently banned substance, namely a schedule 8 opioid analgesic tapentadol. He was fined $3,000 and given a 2 month suspension wholly suspended for a year. Which means he is free to continue racing greyhounds.
