The briefing document
In 2023, the damning Ashton Review exposed serious welfare issues associated with overbreeding, inadequate rehoming capacity and prolonged kennelling in the SA greyhound racing industry.
This briefing document uses the industry’s own data and individual greyhound tracking to demonstrate that the SA greyhound racing industry has failed to address these issues.
Critical findings
Warehoused for years: 63% of retired greyhounds publicly listed by GAP SA last raced over a year earlier, and 35% over two years earlier.
Institutionalised warehousing: A separate cohort of 27 greyhounds spent an average of 2.9 years in GAP SA-leased kennels post-racing.
Kennelled to breaking point: Six greyhounds were euthanised on behavioural grounds in 2026 after suffering psychological deterioration during stays of up to 5.5 years in GAP SA-leased kennels.
Relentless breeding pipeline: GRSA permits approximately 1,500 new greyhounds (600 locally bred, 900 imported) to flood the system annually, feeding racing demand with zero regard for lifetime welfare capacity.
