As a former Racing Minister in Tasmania in the Liberal Government I was obviously privy to racing portfolio information. It is my well informed view that given economic difficulties now facing Tasmania and the cost of propping up unpopular and often cruel greyhound racing, this practice cannot be sustained or justified.
That was my publicly expressed view as an independent candidate in last year’s state election and it is still my strongly held view.
I wish to support three quarters of the Tasmanian community and two thirds of lower house MPs who have been clear that it should now be ended.
With great respect, I hope MLCs will give strong consideration to this almost unprecedented weight of public opinion when they consider the bill this week.”
