Eleven greyhounds killed racing in July 2025

The image shows Magic Mack who suffered a fractured leg as a result of this horrific fall. He was killed by the on-track vet.

Australian greyhounds continued to be killed racing in July in horrific track falls. Some of these falls have been purged from the race videos, or the videos have simply been removed by the various state greyhound racing bodies. Eleven greyhounds died at tracks in July and at least a further eight were killed in the days and weeks following their injuries.

Honey Blitz was the favourite in race 11 at Geelong Victoria on July 4. He was part of a five dog collision and fell along with three other greyhounds. His fall is captured on the race video. Honey Blitz suffered a right radius and ulna fracture and was killed by the industry vet after his race. He was only 21 months old and it was his 5th and last race. His career had lasted only 4 weeks.

On July 7 at Horsham Victoria two year old Virat was involved in a five dog collision in race 8. He fell and fractured his right radius and ulna. The footage of the fall shows the carnage of the collision. Virat had been raced on July 3 in a 515m race. A mere four days later he was again forced to race over 485m. His body had not been given time to recover between races. He was killed by the on track vet after the race. The track was inspected after race 8 by the stewards and deemed “suitable for racing”. Virat had been forced to race 42 times.

Two year old Magic Mack fell in race 3 at Mt Gambier South Australia on July 13. There is no race video uploaded. Magic Mack fractured his distal humerus and the industry vet killed him after the race. His owner/trainer now has only one racing greyhound left, Magic Mack’s sister Magic Poppy.

On July 15 West On Batman, a puppy of just 21 months, was running in the “Bring the Family”, race 2, at Mandurah Western Australia. Just three seconds after the start he hit the inside running rail and tailed off. His litter sister West On Batgirl was also running in the race, in fact his trainer had four of the eight greyhounds in race 2. West On Batman had suffered an open fracture of his left foreleg and was killed by the industry vet at the track. It was his first ever race and his career had lasted mere seconds.

A greyhound was killed each day over the next four days. Ballinger Beach was running in race 6 at Rockhampton on July 20 when he collided with the inside running rail and fell. His fall has been edited out of the race video. The stewards report states he suffered a “right lower fore injury”. He was killed by the on course vet soon after. Ballinger Beach had just turned two years old.

The next day at Northam track in Western Australia veteran greyhound Trunkey Jennings was running in race 6 when he collided with another greyhound and fell soon after the start. His cries of distress and pain can be heard on the race video as both his front legs literally snap, and he helplessly catapults along the track. Trunkey Jennings had suffered open fractures of his radius and ulna in both his front legs. He was killed by the industry vet at the track. Trunkey Jennings was three years old and had been forced to race 65 times.

The day after, July 22, three year old Cool Hand Rio was running in race 11 at the brand new dog killing track Q1 Lakeside in Queensland. He was dragged down by another greyhound on the first turn and suffered multiple fractures- his nearside radius and ulna as well as his tibia. His fall has been edited out of the race video. Cool Hand Rio was killed by the on track vet the same day.

On July 23 River Runs Dry was running in race 9 at Rockhampton Queensland when she was checked and fell heavily at the first turn. Her fall has been edited out of the race video. River Runs Dry suffered a “right fore injury”. She was just two years old. River Runs Dry was killed
by the on course vet.

Race 6 at Broken Hill NSW proved fatal for Edgy Nora on July 27. She collided with another greyhound on the first turn and fell. The race video shows her fall, it is so quick and she disappears from view. Edgy Nora suffered catastrophic injuries- a compound fracture of her nearside radius and ulna as well as fractures of her offside tibia and fibula. Both her front legs shattered. Edgy Nora, two years old, was put out of her agony by the on track vet.

Two greyhounds were killed racing on July 28. Two year old Frisco Joe fell in race 4 at Shepparton Victoria. He can be seen in the race video cartwheeling helplessly along the track after he falls. Frisco Joe had sustained a spinal fracture (a broken back). Only two years old, he was killed by the industry vet.

Four year old Raider’s Guide was running in his 79th race at Launceston Tasmania when he collided with other greyhounds on the first turn and fell. He had suffered a cervical spine injury, another broken neck or back. There is no race video available. Raider’s Guide was killed off track and the race was declared a “no race”. He had died in vain. Raider’s Guide was a very successful greyhound, having won more than $660,000 over his career where he had been transported across Australia from Tasmania to race in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and NSW. His death caused a media uproar and was one of the catalysts leading to the Tasmanian government announcing the end of public funding for greyhound racing from 2029. Perhaps Raider’s Guide didn’t die in vain after all.

The greyhounds who “don’t count” as track deaths

In addition at least a further eight greyhounds were killed away from the tracks following their injuries.

On July 2 Jumbuk Mahmood, 22 months, fractured his tibia at Sale, Victoria. Despite being given a 90 day standdown period, less than a month later he was listed in Fasttrack database as “retired (deceased)”.

Three year old Shack Up Beast fractured his “hind toes” at Maitland NSW on July 7. A mere two days later he was listed in eTrac as “deceased (euth-injury)”. He had been given a 60 day standdown period.

The same day at Northam WA three year old Sure Oliver fractured his right stifle. On July 10 his status on eTrac was updated to “deceased (euth-injury)”.

On July 14 four year old Silver Taquisha fractured her right hock at Warrnambool Victoria. On July 17 she was listed on Fasttrack as “retired (deceased)”.

Brewery Town, two, fractured her hock at Casino NSW on July 17. She was given a 90 day standdown period but on August 1 she was listed on eTrac as “deceased (euth-injury)”.

On July 23 Samurai suffered a compound fracture of his foreleg while racing at Temora NSW. His status was updated in eTrac on August 22 to “deceased-track injury”. Samurai was two years old.

Two year old Lots Of Bugs fractured his right hock at Townsville Queensland on July 25. He was given a 90 day standdown period. On July 30 he was listed as “deceased(euth-injury)”.

On July 30 four year old She’s Some Fox suffered a “near side hind” injury while running in her 103rd race at Capalaba Queensland. The very next day she was listed as “deceased(euth-injury)”. Her trainer now has only one greyhound left racing.
