Nine greyhounds killed racing in August 2025

Nine greyhounds were killed racing in August 2025, two at the same race meeting. And the various greyhound racing bodies continue to censor and edit the horrific falls out of the replays despite touting greyhound racing as “family friendly entertainment”.

A further six greyhounds suffered broken limbs and in one case an incident of post race “bloat” or gastric dilatation-volvulus and were killed in the following days.

August started badly for greyhounds when two year old Psycho Fury was checked coming out of the first turn at Townsville on August 1. He had suffered a compound fracture to his right hindleg. Racing Queensland has not uploaded the race video. Psycho Fury was killed by the industry vet and the stewards report also notes that “post mortem samples were collected”. Was this blood? Urine? Bits of his shattered leg? We will likely never know.

On August 5, not one but two greyhounds racing at Horsham in Victoria were killed. Mickey Mouse, just turned two, was severely checked and fell at the first turn in race 2. He had fractured his right humerus. Mickey Mouse was killed by the on track vet. Later in race 11, Aston Amisha, just turned three, actually finished her race but was checked and hit the outside fence as she ran into the catching pen. She fractured her right radius and ulna as well as her right carpal bone. In the race video she can be seen hesitating as she is loaded into the starting box before her fateful race. She stops and looks over her shoulder, a last look behind her before she is bundled into the box. Aston Amisha was also killed by the on track vet.

A greyhound was killed racing each day for the next four days.

Two year old Matchbox Flame was running in race 11 at Shepparton Victoria on August 11. She was dragged down on the first turn and her fall is captured on the race video where she can be seen skidding helplessly along the track on her back. Matchbox Flame had fractured her right radius and ulna. Race 11 was a 390m long race and she had been forced to race just three days prior to this in a 425m race. Veterinary advice is that greyhounds should be given one full day for each 100m raced to recuperate to allow their bodies to fully recover. Poor Matchbox Flame was likely not given enough time for her body to repair before her final and fatal race. She was killed by the on course vet.

Three year old Apple Pie was racing at Bulli track in New South Wales on August 12 when she had her heels galloped on and fell on the first turn. Her fall has been edited out of the race video by Greyhound Racing NSW but CPG has captured her fall. She somersaults and appears to lie on the track. A track employee can be seen running in her direction. Apple Pie fractured not only her offside humerus but also suffered an excruciating compound fracture of her nearside radius and ulna which meant she had broken both of her forelegs. She was the smallest greyhound in her race. Apple Pie was killed by the industry vet.

On August 13 at Ballarat in Victoria Mepunga Loaf, nearly four, “faltered” in the back straight and pulled up, unable to go on. He had suffered a hock fracture. Greyhound Racing Victoria has chosen not to make the race video available for public viewing. Mepunga Loaf had started his “career” in Victoria then raced in Queensland. He had been moved between trainers and had not raced for six months before being moved back to Victoria and passed onto a trainer who had not had a greyhound to race in over two years. Mepunga Loaf was his only racing greyhound. Now he has none as Mepunga Loaf was killed after his 46th race by the industry vet at Ballarat. After his race stewards inspected the track and deemed it “suitable for racing”.

The next day, August 14, at Mt Gambier two year old Mr. Tangelo hit the running rail in race 2 and fell. Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds captured the live race video which has not been subsequently uploaded by Greyhound Racing South Australia. It shows Mr. Tangelo’s fall, he hits the rail and falls, legs flailing helplessly. He suffered a “left foreleg shoulder” injury according to the stewards reports. The on track vet killed him soon after his race.

On August 29, Ashman, who had just turned two, was running in race 3 at Bendigo Victoria. He was “severely checked” turning off the back straight and fell, along with another greyhound. The race commentator can be heard exclaiming there’s “big trouble” as the dogs fell. Ashman fractured his right radius and ulna. It was his fourth only race and his “career” had lasted a mere four weeks. He was killed by the on course vet.

The next day at Cannington Western Australia two year old West On Tilly was running in the “Greyhounds As Pets” race when she collided with another greyhound and fell on the first turn. She was the favourite in the race. West On Tilly suffered a broken radius and ulna. She will never get a chance to be a pet because she was killed by the industry vet soon after her race.

The greyhounds who “don’t count” as track deaths

A further six greyhounds who raced in August and either fractured bones racing or suffered other adverse conditions post race are now listed as “deceased” in the databases.

Two year old Shima Stan fractured his hock at Geelong on August 1. He was given a 90 day standdown period but a week later was listed as “deceased (euth-injury)”. He had been raced 22 times and won his connections over $63,000.

On August 3 at Grafton Tingha Taught Us, three, was found to be “unwell” in his kennel post race. The industry vet diagnosed him with gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (bloat). Factors such as stress, eating quickly and vigorous exercise before or after a meal increase the risk of bloat, a quick developing and life threatening condition. Tingha Taught Us was given a 90 day standdown period and transported to a vet hospital but two days later he was listed on eTrac as “deceased-euth (illness, age)”.

Three year old Mortality fractured his right hock at the Meadows track in Victoria on August 13. Six days later his status was updated in the database to “deceased(euth-injury)”.

On August 19 three year old Paw Glory fractured his hind metatarsals and was given a 90 day standdown period. A week later he was listed as “deceased(euth-inj)”.

Exquisite, three, injured her left hind leg while racing at Rockhampton Queensland on August 27. She was given a 60 day standdown period but on September 2 was listed in eTrac as “deceased(euth-inj)”.

The next day, August 28, three year old Patriot James suffered a compound fracture to his radius and ulna while racing at Mandurah in Western Australia. On September 4 his status in eTrac was updated to “deceased(euth-inj)”.
