Image shows Charos Journey skidding on his back after he fell and somersaulted across the track. Charos Journey suffered an agonising open fracture of his leg and was killed by the on-track industry vet. He was two years old.
Six greyhounds lost their lives racing in September, either killed at the track following catastrophic injuries, or in the case of Paw Nickara, fell violently and died instantly. Six more greyhounds died after suffering leg fractures. Over 80 young greyhounds fractured their legs in September, with most receiving a 60 or 90 day standdown period. A few have been “retired”, more are still listed as racing with nearly two dozen having “no trainer”.
Three year old Career Highlight became the 5th greyhound killed in 2026 at Cannington, Western Australia, on September 5. He collided with another greyhound on the first turn in race 3 and fell onto the wet track. He can be seen in the race video careening along the track where he suffered an agonising open fracture of his right radius and ulna. The industry vet killed him soon after, which was just part of the job for the vet but was a definite career lowlight for the greyhound. Career Highlight had been forced to race 17 times and had won his syndicate over $46,000.
Paw Vince, a veteran of 121 races, snapped his left hock only three strides into race 8 at Sale on September 13, the “Doin’ Dumplings” race. Perhaps the business should change its name to “Doin’ Dead Dogs”? Despite his broken leg Paw Vince gamely ran on as he had been conditioned to do, and the race video shows him finishing well behind the rest of the race. The on track vet killed him soon after. The track was inspected by stewards after this but deemed it “suitable for racing”. Paw Vince’s owner/breeder has hundreds of greyhounds and most months at least one is killed due to track injuries. Paw Vince’s trainer, who races greyhounds on an industrial scale, had two greyhounds killed trackside in September. Paw Vince, four years old, had won his connections over $95,000.
On September 14, three year old Diva Ethics became the second greyhound killed at Maitland track so far this year.. During race 9 she collided with another greyhound who was falling and fell herself. Diva Ethics suffered a fractured humerus and “failed to finish”. Her fall has been edited out of the race video by Greyhound Racing New South Wales which on one hand encourages punters and participants to bring along their kiddies to watch greyhounds break legs but on the other hand doesn’t like any footage that paints the industry in a bad light being viewed by members of the public. Diva Ethics had raced 39 times. She was killed by the on course vet after the race.
The same day at Northam, Western Australia, two year old Charos Journey suffered an agonising open fracture of his right radius and ulna when he fell in race 9, the so-called “Free For All”. And what a free for all it was, with 5 separate collisions between greyhounds during the race. Charos Journey fell, somersaulted across the track then skidded on his back. He “failed to finish” the race. He was killed by the industry vet. Charos Journey had been forced to race 23 times.
Two year old Clyde Bale was severely checked during race 7 at Geelong on September 21. The race video shows him trying to decelerate and pull up. Clyde Bale had fractured his right tibia. It was his 39th start. The industry vet killed him soon after and Clyde Bale became the 3rd greyhound to be killed at Geelong so far this year.
On 30 September Paw Nickara became the 4th greyhound to die in 2026 at Ballarat track. Running in her 39th race, she fell approaching the home turn. The race video shows her fall and it is confronting viewing. She catapults helplessly through the air in an arc, flipping head over heels. Paw Nickara lay on the track, dead. She was only two years old. GRV has ordered a necropsy but it is likely she died of a skull or spinal injury. Paw Nickara shared the same trainer as Paw Vince who had been killed just two weeks previously.
At least a further 6 greyhounds were killed in the days following their injuries in September.
The new Q1 Lakeside track near Ipswich continued to kill greyhounds at an alarming rate. Three year old Little Starsky suffered an “off side hind injury” on September 2. He was given a 90 day standdown period but has since been listed as “deceased”. Little Starsky was one of 7 in his litter, of which 3 were not even named.
Four year old Blue Jezebel suffered an excruciating compound fracture of her near side radius and ulna during race 3 at Dubbo on September 7. She was given a 90 day standdown period. One of 8 in her litter, Blue Jezebel is now the second one to be listed as “deceased” while a further 2 are “retired”. Sadly three of her littermates are still being forced to race.
Shepparton track injured two greyhounds severely in just four days. Both were given 90 day standdown periods. Both are now listed as “deceased”. On September 7 two year old Flying Maverick fractured his left radius and ulna. Three days later on September 10 two year old Irish Carla fractured her right tarsus bone. She was one of 10 in her litter. Two were unnamed.
On September 15 two year old Koala Claws suffered a “hind leg injury” in race 13 at Q1 Lakeside. Her owner used to train greyhounds but now concentrates on breeding, raising and breaking greyhounds along with her whole family. With that many greyhounds, they didn’t need the inconvenience of one needing surgery and rehabilitation and so Koala Claws is now listed as “deceased” despite being given a 90 day standdown. The family regularly posts on social media with greyhounds looking for homes, often listed as “free”.
Two days later at Warrnambool two year old Right Path fractured his left femur in race 2. His owner/trainer opted to have him killed in the days following his injury despite him having been given a 90 day standdown.
Rest in peace - we will remember them
