Four young greyhounds were killed on race tracks in August. Four too many. At least a further four suffered fractured bones and were killed in the days following their injuries. Wagga track in regional NSW killed two greyhounds in two race meets, while Victorian tracks continued to kill 5 more greyhounds.

Potato Cakes, just a puppy of 20 months, was running in only his 5 th race at Bendigo on August 14 when he fell. His fall is captured on the race video- he is checked and falls at speed, his mouth gaping. The race carries on and the commentator doesn’t even mention the fall. As the video continues a track worker can be seen heading onto the track to retrieve Potato Cakes who had fractured his left radius and ulna. Potato Cakes’ “career” had lasted 7 weeks, he was killed by the industry vet after the race which had been sponsored by the Bendigo Advertiser newspaper.

On August 18 two year old Tiggerlong Socks, owned and trained by local participant Michael Finn was running in race 11 at Wagga Wagga track. She lead the field in the first few seconds then was galloped on and fell. The race video shows her fall, she swiftly goes down and falls onto her back at speed. Tiggerlong Socks suffered compound fractures of BOTH her front legs. The race commentator dismissed her life ending fall as “went amiss” and causing “a little bit of havoc”. At the end of the race the retrieval cart can be seen trundling out on the track to pick up the stricken Tiggerlong Socks. She was killed by the on track vet. Almost to the day four years ago at Wagga, another greyhound, Tiggerlong Fab, owned and trained by Michael Finn was killed after sustaining a fractured leg.

Wagga track killed another two year old greyhound on August 28. Inspection actually ran 4th in his race before colliding with another greyhound post race and falling heavily. The race was the Ladbrokes Bidgee Cup final and Inspection won his trainer $5,500. Inspection suffered an agonising compound fracture of his nearside radius and ulna as well as a fractures of his offside humerus. At the end of the race video someone can be seen running in the direction of (presumably) the fallen greyhound. Inspection had been forced to race 21 times and was on his third trainer. Inspection was killed by the on course vet. Wagga track had been slated for closure by GRNSW but this decision was overturned in early September 2026 despite the track never meeting minimum safety standards. The track and its trainers are now free to continue to injure and kill young greyhounds with the blessing of the federal member Michael McCormack who congratulated the president of the Wagga Greyhound Club Ben Talbot who many will remember as being penalised by the NSW regulator GWIC for getting a vet to euthanise a healthy greyhound called Better Cruise in the back of a car in the carpark of Wagga track. While young children were in the back seat.

The next day, August 29, two year old Paw Otis was running in race 5 at Sandown Victoria, the ironically named “We Stand With Tasmania” race. Paw Otis was severely checked and fell at the turn off the front straight. He suffered a right radius and ulna fracture. His fall is captured on the race video that also shows more participants and handlers than spectators at the track. A few seconds in Paw Otis falls and flies across the track on his side. The race commentator can be heard saying Paw Otis has taken a tumble” then later saying that “Paw Otis had been collected”. A little later in the video someone in a high-vis vest is seen hurrying onto the track to collect him as he lies in the sand before the rest of the greyhounds in the 515m long race run past again. Despite winning his connections nearly $45,000 during his 35 race “career”, Paw Otis was killed by the industry vet at the track. His owner is one of Australia’s biggest greyhound breeders and his dogs feature in on- track and off- track deaths.

At least a further four greyhounds were killed in the days following their race injuries, despite being given 60 or 90 day standdown periods to allow for treatment and rehabilitation.

Three year old Mojo Bone fractured his off side wrist in race 6 at Q1 Lakeside Queensland on August 8. Despite his 65 start career and winnings of over $25,000 for his owner/trainer husband and wife team, he is now listed as deceased.

Another three year old greyhound called Warrior Ethan fractured his left carpus in race 7 at Sale, Victoria on August 23. Despite being given a 60 day standdown, his owner/trainer opted to have him killed away from the track. Warrior Ethan had raced for the same trainer 82 times and had won him nearly $25,000 yet wasn’t given the chance for rehabilitation and life as a pet. Warrior Ethan was one of eleven in his litter, huge by greyhound standards. Four of his siblings are retired, yet another deceased while two were simply wastage and unnamed. The rest continue to be raced.

Vinnie Black, three, fractured his right tarsus in race 10 at Ballarat Victoria on August 29. Vinnie Black had been raced four times in 12 days. His syndicate opted to have him killed away from the track in the days following his injury. Vinnie Black had been the only pup in his litter.

To end the month, yet another three year old greyhound, Newbrock Tilly, was killed away from the track following a right hock fracture suffered in race 13 at Traralgon Victoria on August 31. She had been raced 56 times.
