Are retired greyhounds dying violently?

Data from the NSW regulator Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission appears to show that retired greyhounds kept by participants are suffering violent deaths.

Out of 1,007 greyhounds reported deceased by participants in FY25/26, there were 146 dogs in the category “Greyhound Death Notification – Accident or Injury”.

These dogs died from accidents or injuries – they were NOT euthanased.

104 were named, 42 were unnamed. Of the 104 named, all are listed as “retired” in the FastTrack database. GWIC has stopped the public from viewing the greyhounds’ details in eTrac.

GWIC has confirmed that all the mortalities were reported by participants, and that the deceased dogs were retired to participants.

Why are so many dogs retained by participants dying violently? Why aren’t they retired to GAP or community rescues?
