The headline rehoming figures touted by the Australian greyhound racing industry create a misleading picture of a functioning retirement system. Evidence continues to show increasing reliance on unreliable and unsafe channels rather than genuine domestic adoption.
This review uses the industry’s own data to demonstrate that the industry continues to fail the thousands of dogs it overbreeds and exploits each year.
Critical findings
Local rehoming by industry rehoming groups (GAPs) has stalled highlighting the industry’s failure to respond to the nationwide adoption crisis.
Greyhound exports remain alarmingly high with 788 greyhounds exported through GAP programs.
Warehousing remains widespread with 2,494 greyhounds retained by industry participants, many confined for up to 23 hours per day with little stimulation or socialisation.
Unregulated third-party rehoming continues with at least 935 greyhounds rehomed privately with minimal welfare safeguards.
Community rescues increasingly pick up the industry’s slack with volunteer-run rescue groups rehoming at least 545 greyhounds.
Euthanasia remains unacceptably high with 1,755 greyhounds euthanased, many due to injury or behavioural reasons.
Overbreeding continues despite limited adoption capacity with the industry breeding 7,511 greyhound pups.
