The screams of Paw Otis were ignored by participants at Sandown Park VIC as they focused on a big night of Sportsbet gambling.
The Brendan Wheeler-owned Paw Otis fell in Race 5 at 70kmh and suffered a right radius/ulna fracture. His screams of agony can be heard as he was clumsily picked up by a track person, before his life was ended.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars were to be won at the Nationals on 29 August 2026, with Sandown Greyhounds promising a “HUGE night”.
Race 5 was named “We Stand With Tasmania”.
Paw Otis was ignored in the industry event propaganda. An AI search the next day found: “No official reports indicate that a greyhound died or was euthanised on-track during the National Championships meeting at Sandown Park on Saturday, 29 August 2026.”
This has now been corrected.
The night before, Greyhound Clubs Australia and Sandown Greyhounds held a cocktail party at the Hawthorn Arts Centre, with the theme of “Magnifique”.
Paw Otis is the 21st greyhound death on a VIC track this year. At least another 29 have died away from the tracks after suffering serious injuries in their races.
Victoria leads the country in both on-track and off-track deaths.
