Image shows Galloping Suzie as her leg goes through the rail. She suffered a foreleg fracture and was killed by the on-track industry vet. Galloping Suzie was almost 5 years old, in her 100th race at Warragul Victoria.
Six greyhounds were killed on Australian tracks in April 2026. At least a further six greyhounds were given 90 day standdown periods for injuries suffered on track only to be killed a few days later.
On-track deaths ranged from a veteran greyhound of nearly 4 ½ to a youngster running in his 5th race. Three greyhounds were killed on NSW tracks while the ever reliable Cannington track killed another dog. Shepparton and Warragul tracks in Victoria killed a further two.
Galloping Suzie, 4 ½, was running for her 100th time at Warragul Victoria on April 2, in the ironically named “We Stand with Tasmania” race (because nothing beats supporting the soon-to-be-defunded industry in another state by killing another dog). Galloping Suzie was the lightest in her race, weighing a mere 24.8 kg. She faltered turning off the back straight, and pulled up. The race video has not been uploaded. Galloping Suzie had fractured her left radius and ulna. She was killed by the industry vet after the race.
On April 13 Scott Crush, three weeks off his fourth birthday, fractured his left hock during race 12 at Shepparton Victoria. He was “severely checked” in the back straight and “lost ground” then “tailed off”. The race video shows him suddenly pulling back only a few seconds into the race. Despite his broken leg, Scott Crush gamely ran on awkwardly on three legs and finished far behind the field in the 390m race. For his efforts he was killed by the on track vet. Scott Crush had been forced to race 66 times.
Aston Ringgit, another older greyhound of 46 months, was running in race 4 at Nowra NSW on April 16. He was “bumped” by another greyhound and hit the running rail. The race video shows his fall just 10 seconds into the race. Aston Ringgit suffered a bilateral compound fracture of his radius and ulna. Yes, he fractured BOTH his front legs. He must have been in agony before the on course vet killed him. The race video also shows children present at the finishing line. Did they witness Aston Ringgit’s fall and screams as he lay helpless on the track?
On April 18 at Gunnedah NSW another older greyhound It’s A Beast, nearly four, suffered multiple compound fractures of his nearside radius and ulna in race 7. All up, three greyhounds fell during the race, in a meet that was beset with starting box malfunctions and race delays due to fireworks being let off near the track. It’s A Beast fell soon after the start. He shattered his foreleg and the race commentator called it “a bit of bother”. The race video shows the attendants scrambling to retrieve the stricken It’s A Beast from the track and he was killed by the industry vet after the race. For an older greyhound, It’s A Beast had only raced sporadically 14 times.
Still in NSW on April 27, three year old Kawasaki Girl “came together” with another greyhound in race 6 at Maitland. She “lost ground” and fell. The race commentator describes it in the video as “had a tumble”. That “tumble” ended Kawasaki Girl’s life. She suffered a comminuted fracture of her radius, one where the bone shatters into three or more pieces. Kawasaki Girl had been forced to race 82 times. The on track vet killed her after this, her last race. Another greyhound suffered a radius and ulna fracture in race 8 and was given a 90 day standdown. Maitland track was recommended for closure in the 2025 Drake Report as the turn is too tight to meet minimum safety standards.
On April 29 two year old Gone Pub fell in race 5 at Cannington WA. He was in a collision on the first turn, fell and “failed to finish”. He can be seen in the race video careening across the track, his legs flailing helplessly. Gone Pub had suffered a right fore wrist fracture/avulsion/inversion. Again there are children seen on the video at the finishing post. Two other greyhounds suffered fractures in other races that night and were given 90 day standdown periods. One of them, Decennial, was a littermate of Gone Pub. Gone Pub was killed by the industry vet after his 5th race.
The greyhounds who "don't count" as track deaths
More than 50 greyhounds suffered fractures racing in April and were given substantial standdown periods, usually 60 or 90 days.
Of these at least six are now listed as deceased. A further seven are listed as retired. Several are listed as still racing but with no trainer.
Three year old Jet Black Cold suffered a compound fracture of his off side radius and ulna in race 6 at Temora NSW on April 1. He is now listed as deceased.
The same day in Geelong Victoria three year old She’s On Boost fractured her right hind tarsal bone during race 6. She is now listed as deceased. There were eight in her litter-two are deceased, five retired and only one remains racing.
On April 4 three year old He’s On Show suffered a nearside hind “injury” in race 5 at the Q1 Lakeside track in Queensland. It must have been a fracture as he is now listed as deceased despite being given a 90 day standdown.
Three year old Aston Azul fractured her right tarsal bone during race 7 at Murray Bridge South Australia on April 10. She was given a 90 day standdown period. She is now listed as deceased. Of her eight littermates four are retired and another wasn’t even named and is also listed as deceased. Her owner has around 1000 greyhounds.
Two year old Unruly Boy fractured his nearside stopper bone in race 4 at Grafton NSW on April 14. He was given a 60 day standdown period but is now listed as deceased.
Instinctively, four, fractured his nearside wrist in race 2 at Townsville Queensland on April 21. He was the last of his litter left racing. Despite a 90 day standdown and $37,000 in winnings he is now listed as deceased. His trainer had taken 25 greyhounds to race that day.
