The image shows Lakeview Nola falling in the catching pen after her race and suffering a broken neck and “spinal cord trauma”. She was four years old, forced to race 70 times and won her “connections” over $63,000.
Nine greyhounds were killed or died racing in October with Victorian tracks continuing to kill more greyhounds than any other state. At least a further four dogs were injured racing and taken off the tracks only to be killed in the days following their injury.
This included one young greyhound who suffered an excruciating open compound fracture of her foreleg and for some reason was not put out of her agony at the track. Instead she was transported away and killed later despite there being an industry vet present trackside. One two year old greyhound was simply raced to death, dying alone as he bled into his lungs and then suffocated in his own blood in a kennel at the track after his race.
Four year old veteran Lakeview Nola won her race on October 4 at The Meadows track in Victoria before falling in the catching pen and suffering a head and spinal injury. She was pronounced dead by the on track vet. A necropsy was later performed and it revealed Lakeview Nola had broken her neck in two places and suffered “spinal cord trauma”. Her trainer was no doubt comforted by the $7,000 first place prizemoney she earned him in the seconds before she died of a broken neck. Lakeview Nola had been forced to race 70 times and had won her connections over $63,000.
The new track at Purga in Queensland continued to kill greyhounds at an unprecedented rate with the death of puppy Bad Boy Red on October 5. He was checked shortly after the start of race 6, dragged down and fell. His fall is captured on the race video. He falls at lightning speed, his tail flailing madly. Bad Boy Red suffered what the stewards’ report coyly describes as an “off foreleg injury” but seeing as he didn’t leave the track alive we can only presume that the injury was a broken leg. Bad Boy Red was only 23 months old.
On October 6 at Ballarat, two year old Mt. View Raw was severely checked and fell turning off the back straight. She fractured her right humerus. The commentator described her fall as “a tumble”. The race video shows her falling only seconds into her 40th race. She was killed by the industry vet soon after her race. Mt. View Raw had won a total of $2,320 in her 13 month “career”.
The next day at Mandurah, Western Australia, Magic Entry had her heels galloped on by another greyhound and fell in race 8. The race video shows her falling at speed and she disappears from sight in the blink of an eye. She “failed to finish”. Magic Entry had fractured her left elbow. The industry vet killed her at the track. Magic Entry had raced 57 times and had won her owner over $40,000.
October 16 proved a deadly day for greyhounds. Two year old Atlas Alien came third in race 7 at Bendigo only to be found “unresponsive” in the kennels after his race. He was pronounced deceased by the on course vet and a necropsy was ordered. The necropsy results showed Atlas Alien died of “extensive haemorrhage and pulmonary congestion leading to circulatory collapse”. In other words, he was raced to death. Alone in a kennel at the track, his distress and suffering must have been great.
Clutch Play, just a puppy of 23 months, was running in race 6 at Richmond NSW when he fell over another fallen greyhound. He suffered an excruciating comminuted fracture of his offside hock (a fracture where the bone is literally shattered into three or more pieces). His fall has been edited out of the race replay by Greyhound Racing NSW. Clutch Play was killed by the industry vet at the track. And the other fallen greyhound? Perfect Panama suffered a radius and ulna fracture and was given a 90 day standdown.
And yet another death at the new Q1 track at Purga Queensland of yet another puppy of 23 months, Chunky Monkey who suffered multiple “catastrophic” fractures to his nearside radius and ulna in race 6. In the race video, he is running at such a speed that he simply disappears from sight as he is dragged down by another greyhound. Not surprisingly he “failed to finish” and was killed by the on-track vet soon after. Chunky Monkey had raced an unlucky 13 times.
Paw Ucolta, 2 ½ , was running in race 11 at Sandown in Victoria on October 20 when he was severely checked and fell on the home turn. The race video shows him fall, legs akimbo, and as the race continues on a track attendant is seen jogging out of frame presumably toward the stricken greyhound. Paw Ucolta had fractured his right humerus and was killed by the industry vet after the race. Paw Ucolta had been a good money spinner for his owner but not good enough evidently for surgery and rehabilitation.
Two year old Black Benz ran his last race at Ballarat Victoria on October 29. He was severely checked and hit the inside rail. His fall is captured on the race video- he hits the rail and falls heavily onto his front and skids helplessly along the track. That fall had snapped his left radius and he didn’t leave the track alive. The on course vet killed him. Black Benz had raced only 7 times and won $655.
The greyhounds who “don’t count” as track deaths
And now to the greyhounds who fractured limbs and were given a 90 day standdown period, ostensibly for surgery and rehabilitation, only to appear a week or two after their injury on the databases as “retired (deceased)”. Or in fact simply scrubbed from the database. Yes, the NSW regulator GWIC has decided to remove NSW greyhounds that have died from the search portal eTrac.
Because nothing screams “plenty to hide” more than untraceable greyhounds. Which naturally leads to speculation and conjecture. Of course, GWIC claims the rationale behind removing deceased greyhounds from eTrac is that dead dogs, as well as those that have been retired and adopted out are no longer part of the NSW racing register.
On October 7 at Mandurah Western Australia, Three year old Break Out Boy fractured his hock in race 9. He is now listed in Fasttrack as “retired(deceased)”.
At Temora NSW on October 15, Jacobite Hope, just a puppy of 19 months and running in her 2nd race suffered an open compound fracture of her foreleg. A search of eTrac brings up “No greyhound found” but she is listed in another database as “retired(deceased)”. The question is why wasn’t she euthanised at the track? The injury she sustained was catastrophic and would have been excruciating. She was young and unproven so likely not a breeding prospect so why would her owner/trainer and the industry vet decide to prolong her suffering unnecessarily?
On October 20 at Gawler South Australia veteran greyhound Big Chief Size ran his last race when he fractured his right tarsal bone, or hock. Despite winning his owner/trainer over $66,000 in 54 starts, Big Chief Size has turned up on the database as “retired(deceased)”. He was his trainers only greyhound.
Another puppy, Redacted, 20 months, fractured her left femur at The Meadows track in Victoria on October 25. She is now listed in Fasttrack as “retired(deceased)” after only 8 races.
And finally the odd case of Dewana Craig, who last raced at Warragul track in Victoria on August 26 but who had been passed to a Tasmanian trainer some time after that. The stewards report of October 23 in Hobart states Dewana Craig as “deceased” prior to his scheduled race but he is listed as “retired” in Fasttrack. Presumably the 20 month old greyhound died of “natural causes” in the days or weeks leading up to his October 23 race.
