Federal Election 2025 Scorecard

Stand up for greyhounds this Federal election!

We’ve put together this election scorecard, summarising Federal party’s position on policies crucial to greyhound welfare.

While racing legislation largely sits with the state governments, the Federal government could ban the exporting of greyhounds, establish an independent office of animal welfare, and could be actively working with all states and territories for a nationwide ban on greyhound racing.

Read more about the grave issues with greyhound exporting.

Read more from Animal Liberation about the call for an independent office of animal welfare.

To compile this scorecard, we looked at party’s policies and statements online. We also wrote to each party asking:

  • Does your party support banning the commercial trade of greyhounds to and from Australia, including for breeding and racing?
  • Does your party support banning the commercial trade of greyhound breeding materials to and from Australia?
  • Does your party support establishing an independent Federal office of animal welfare?
  • Does your party support working with state and territory governments to end greyhound racing countrywide?

Independents

While this scorecard covers the political parties, some independents and teals also support an end to greyhound exports and greyhound racing.

These independent MPs and candidates have been vocal in calling for an end to greyhound racing:
  • Andrew Wilke – Independent Member for Clark
  • Sophie Scamps – Independent Member for Mackeller
  • Peter George – Independent Candidate for Franklin
  • Nicolette Boele  – Independent Candidate for Bradfield

Write to your Federal MP

Our Federal representatives need to take a stand against greyhound racing this Federal election.

This year alone, 31 greyhounds have been killed on racing tracks around the country and there have been 2979 greyhound injuries. While racing legislation sits with the state governments, the Federal government could be working with all states and territories for a nationwide ban on greyhound racing.

While we’re in the middle of a cost of living and housing crisis, millions of dollars in public money is given to the greyhound racing sector.

Between 2016 and 2023, around 2,000 greyhounds were exported from Australia. Exporting puts greyhounds are risk of abuse and neglect, and greyhounds have ended up in facilities with poor welfare standards. The Federal government could stop this.

Write to your Federal representative to let them know that you’re fighting for an end to greyhound racing, greyhound export and greyhound suffering. Ask them where they stand, and call on then to support an end to greyhound racing.

Election Scorecard Disclaimer

The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds (CPG) election scorecard is an advocacy tool designed to give voters a summary of the policies of political parties in the 2025 Federal election, regarding the welfare of greyhounds. The scorecard summarises the position of political parties on the key greyhound welfare policy questions, relevant to CPGs advocacy goals.

To prepare the scorecard, the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds wrote to political parties asking for their responses to key greyhound welfare policies. The questions we asked were:

  • Does your party support banning the commercial trade of greyhounds to and from Australia, including for breeding and racing?
  • Does your party support banning the commercial trade of greyhound breeding materials to and from Australia?
  • Does your party support establishing an independent Federal office of animal welfare?
  • Does your party support working with state and territory governments to end greyhound racing countrywide?

To complete the scorecard, we took into consideration responses to our emails, as well as public comments and statements online, voting patterns and policy announcements by Federal parties.

In addition, CPG have prepared a letter for voters to send to their Federal members of parliament, which also ask the above questions. This can be viewed here: greyhoundcoalition.com/fed25/ As any responses go back to individuals, CPG has not seen responses from any individual Federal members of parliament.

CPG does not promote or oppose political parties or direct people on how to vote. CPG does not have any commercial, financial or political affiliation with any party.  The scorecard is not an endorsement of any party or candidate. It’s an issue-based summary that shows how closely party policies and objectives align with our objectives for greyhound welfare. We encourage everyone to do their own research regarding the policies of Federal political parties, when deciding their vote.

The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds publicises greyhound welfare issues including track deaths and injuries across print media, radio, TV and social media. We highlight ongoing issues with greyhound racing by conducting research into the industry and publishing reports and whitepapers. We work with supportive law makers to to advocate for legislative changes and improvements for greyhound welfare.
