After the death of a juvenile greyhound, the Murray Bridge racecourse in South Australia has become one of the most dangerous in Australia.
Murray Bridge has joined the list of the second-deadliest tracks for greyhound racing, behind Gawler (SA), Richmond (NSW), and Wagga Wagga, with four fatalities this year (NSW). With seven deaths in 2021, Brisbane’s Albion Park is currently the nation’s most deadly track.
The Murray Bridge stewards’ report for June 14, 2021, states that in Race 12, the two-year-old Cash Or Cheque was involved in a collision with other dogs on the first curve and lost his balance. She had a fractured foreleg and was put to death by the track veterinarian.
Only two greyhounds perished at Murray Bridge in the entire year 2020.
Two racetracks—a one-turn “horseshoe” track and a straight track—are available at the Murray Bridge site. Unfortunately, three fatalities have happened in the curved path this year. One more occurred in the catching pen after the race at the straight track.
Cash Or Cheque’s passing brings the total number of SA greyhound deaths in 2021 to nine. Seventy-eight greyhounds have died nationwide (listed here).
According to the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds (CPG), the series of deaths in SA showed the brutality and risks of greyhound racing.
Local radio stations and websites, including 5MU Local News, have reported on the passing of Cash Or Cheque.
Data note of the 78 greyhounds killed so far on Australian racetracks in 2021:
– 70% were killed after racing in 7 or 8 dog races
– 76% were fatally injured at track turns
– 87% sustained leg fractures
– 60% were fatally injured by falling

A retired 4 year old greyhound of mine injured a foreleg one week earlier than Cash or Cheque at Murray Bridge. She wasnt running for money she was running for fun. She was taken to vet immediately and fixed. Spent two days at the vet and is now in the recovery stage. A huge vet bill to fix my dog. BUT I LOVE MY DOGS. DO THEY????? Most of these injuries can be fixed but trainers cant race injured dogs!
