Victorian racetracks have amused bettors with a barrage of wounds. In November, twenty greyhounds were hurt during two separate racing meets in Warrnambool. Ten dogs were hurt at Cranbourne between these meetings, and one of them perished. Consequently, in just three Victorian race meetings, 30 greyhounds were injured, and one was killed.
This carnage occurred as Greyhound Racing Victoria released its glossy annual report, with the words: “Greyhound welfare and integrity continued as GRV’s overarching priorities in 2020-21.”
It is a devastating criticism of the entire industry that the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club claims it is “today regarded as one of the most successful greyhound racing clubs in Australia.”
Remembering the other defeats from the week is essential. In the four days from November 8 to November 11, 2021, the on-track vet killed six canines across the country.
Update: The awful VIC run keeps going. On November 13, The Meadows (Melbourne) reported eight injuries, and Warragul reported seven. So there could be 8710 injuries overall and 3045 in Victoria this year.
