Ebonique had to compete in 93 races but made it through. Unfortunately, Ebonique’s life comes to a sad end.
The five-year-old and her sister Piparae were involved in a collision at Cranbourne on November 8, 2021, during her 94th race.
Suffering a broken ankle but still struggling to run home, Ebonique was euthanased post-race by the on-track vet. Despite winning more than $18,000, her life was not saved.
Ebonique fell heavily in her 91st race. There was a 79-day break between her 93rd and her last race – had she been injured?
She’d spent four years running around tracks at Cranbourne, Warragul and Sandown Park.
Five of Ebonique’s litter mates are also listed as “retired” – which could mean dead.
Ten other greyhounds suffered injuries at the race meeting on November 8.
Cranbourne is now the third-deadliest track in Australia and Victoria this year after seven greyhounds have perished. [Update: Eight greyhounds total now]
What would these greyhounds think of the big sign at the racetrack: “At Cranbourne greyhounds are our life”

About CPG
The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds has made a ban on greyhound racing one of its top priorities. Until then, we struggle to end the suffering of racing greyhounds. Our campaigns are aimed at state governments and attempt to change public opinion.
CPG reports injuries and fatalities at greyhound tracks in print, radio, and television. We want to hold the federal, state, and local governments responsible for not doing enough to prevent needless suffering and death for greyhounds.
