Regulation in Northern Territory

There is no independent regulator in the NT.

Greyhound racing in the NT is regulated by Licensing NT on behalf of the NT Racing Commission, and specifically greyhound racing. This Commission is established under the Racing and Betting Act 1983. The objects of the Act are to: promote probity and integrity in racing and betting in the Territory, fairness, integrity and efficiency in the operations of persons engaged in racing and betting in the Territory, and to reduce any adverse social impact of betting.

The greyhound racing industry, its promoters and regulators are responsible for the welfare of greyhound racing dogs, and therefore is self-regulated.

The NT Racing Commission appointed an investigation into the Darwin Greyhound Association (DGA) based on complaints about the industry’s conduct. As part of this report, the findings from investigations from other states into their greyhound racing industry were reported in an appendix (see above link): NSW (p189), Tasmania (p201), QLD (p206), and Victoria (p214).
