Highlighting the sickness of the greyhound racing industry, five dogs were injured at the racetrack staging the Victorian Greyhound Awards night on 8 August 2024.
One of the injured dogs was Hector Frawley, described as a “much-loved superstar” and named Greyhound of the Year.
According to the Sandown stewards’ report, “Hector Fawley (severely checked and fell after the winning post) underwent a post–race veterinary examination and was found to have an injury to the left sartorius muscle.”
Of the other four injured dogs, Ultimate Jewel suffered a fractured hock and is now under threat of being killed away from the track (like 22 other Victorian greyhounds with broken legs this year).
Canya Striker suffered an abrasion to the hind leg, Winston Town split webbing on the hindleg, and Stormy Day a triceps muscle injury and right scapula soreness.
Industry reporting of the awards failed to mention any of the injuries on the night, or the 382 dogs euthanased in FY22/23, or the live baiting, cruelty and doping crimes by racing participants.
Or the death of Scotty’s Stacy at Sandown four days previously, killed with a hock fracture.
Because they only care about the money, not the dogs.
A large group of protesters outside the track brought some sanity to the night and reflected growing community disgust with dog racing.
