A fourth greyhound has been killed in a NSW race using the new “double-arm” lures supposed to keep dogs safe.
Two-year-old About Jemma was killed at Dubbo on 19 February 2024 in the track’s first use of the safety lure.
Double-arm lures have two lures attached, rather than the single one commonly used in NSW. The two lures hang about 600mm apart, and supposedly stop the dogs bunching together so they keep to their “lanes”.
NSW regulator GWIC’s chief commissioner Alby Taylor expected the new lures to have a “major impact” on reducing racing injuries.
However, trials on several NSW tracks shows that racetracks are still deathtraps and proves – once again – that they can never be made safe.
All the four deaths occurred after collisions, raising stark questions about the lures. Are they just PR stunts?
