The racing industry hates to think of greyhounds as individual dogs. Well, here’s another tragic story of individual greyhounds that we won’t allow to be swept under the carpet. Two greyhounds were killed on the same day.
Fly Calypso was a two-year-old girl born on 5 November 2019.
On 10 May 2022, she crashed into the catching pen gate at Launceston TAS, suffered a “catastrophic spinal injury”, and was euthanized.
On the other side of the country, Pecan Monelli was also born on 5 November 2019.
She was also euthanized on 10 May 2022, in Mandurah WA, after fracturing her wrist and radius/ulna bones.
Fly Calypso was running her fourth race; Pecan Monelli her 23rd.
Linked in birth, and linked in death. Just two of the beautiful greyhounds are killed in their hundreds every year to serve this rotten industry.
The image at the top shows Fly Calypso running to her doom; below is Pecan Monelli at the moment of leg fracture.
