The heartfelt tale of Lewis, the Greyt Greys Rescue dog who received an upgrade, was one of the most uplifting greyhound stories in recent memory.
The owner of Lewis was moving to Italy from Australia. Lewis received a free upgrade to business class on an almost empty Singapore Airlines flight rather than having to spend three days in the cargo hold.
And because there was a lot of love going round, Lewis celebrated his birthday mid-flight with cake and treats.
On travel news websites and social media, his adventure garnered widespread coverage.
Sadly, Lewis’ heroic tale also makes us think about the greyhounds still confined to the slot machine.
Their journeys often include being shunted around regional tracks. The number of vehicle breakdowns mentioned in stewards’ reports shows that travel standards are the opposite of business class.
And the greyhound trip frequently results in fatalities or serious injuries.
Consider the recent deaths on two tracks.
Darling Display was put to death in Grafton, NSW, with a shattered hock. Her schedule this year included:
Casino – Gosford – Casino – Lismore – Gosford – Capabala QLD – Lismore – Casino – Maitland – Wauchope – Capalaba QLD – Lismore – Casino – Lismore – Grafton – Casino – Grafton (death)
Overgrip had a damaged tibia and was put to death in Brisbane, QLD. His schedule included:
Lismore – Brisbane – Casino – Lismore – Brisbane – Lismore – Casino – Brisbane – Lismore – Ipswich – Brisbane – Ipswich – Brisbane (death)
Lewis was fortunate enough to shed some light on the gloomy, black surroundings.
