Wentworth Park Protest

With five deaths in 2022, Wentworth Park is currently the deadliest track in NSW, and the third-worst in Australia. At this rate, more than 25 greyhounds may die by the time the track is closed in 2027.

The greed and cruelty of the greyhound racing industry will be on full display on 24 September at Wentworth Park. The Million Dollar Chase is a celebration of all that is heartless and money-hungry about an industry that exploits, injures and kills dogs every day.

Not only does the owner of the winning dog receive a million dollars but there is a million dollar “lucky door” prize. This is to try and attract an audience because people don’t want to watch greyhounds being maimed and killed.

A protest is being held on the day of the Million Dollar Chase with speakers from across the greyhound welfare and advocacy community.

Three greyhounds were killed on NSW racetracks on the same day that the head of Greyhound Racing NSW declared that greyhound racing was a “family-based, wholesome sport”.

Return Wentworth Park to the public

In July 2020, the City of Sydney Council voted eight to two to demand that the NSW Government “return Wentworth Park to the public”.

“It doesn’t seem right that so much of Wentworth Park, which sits in the middle of one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Australia, is dominated by a greyhound racing track,” said Clover Moore, Lord Major of Sydney.

Showing again a total lack of respect for the NSW public, Racing Minister Kevin Anderson responded by saying “Thankfully Clover Moore and the almond latte crew have no say over what happens at Wentworth Park.”

The NSW Greyhound, Breeders, Owners & Trainers Association (GBOTA) has a lease at Wentworth Park, a NSW Government-owned asset, through until 2027.
