The death of a greyhound on the Nowra track comes as new research from the Parliamentary Library shows the greyhound cost since the Baird ban failure.
According to the Nowra 16 April 2026 stewards report, in Race 4 Aston Ringgitt hit the running rail and suffered a compound fracture of the foreleg.
The South Coast Register reported that both forelegs were broken. He was euthanased by the on-track vet.
Greyhound Racing NSW has removed the race video but an obtained copy shows the dog falling on his legs. The race video also captured a young boy celebrating while Aston Ringgitt is suffering on the other side of the track.
Aston Ringgitt is the 7th racing death on NSW tracks this year (including on-track deaths and post-racing deaths from serious injuries). 1000 dogs have been injured.
The death comes as research from the Federal Parliamentary Library – requested by Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi – reveals the greyhound toll since the Baird Government’s greyhound racing ban was overturned in 2016.
There have been at least 589 racing deaths and 23,240 injuries since July 2017.
There were also 5,796 infringements of the Greyhound Racing Rules and 1,313 charges issued by the regulator.
The data was sourced from Greyhound Racing NSW and Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission documents.
The Library also calculated that the NSW Government has spent over $200 million in taxpayer money on greyhound racing in NSW since 2017.
