13 greyhounds killed racing in June

Thirteen young greyhounds were killed on the racetracks of Australia in June 2021, according to publicly-available stewards’ reports.

This number doesn’t include those dogs with significant injuries taken from the tracks and later euthanased. Some of these we will discover; others will remain buried within the racing industry’s layers of obstruction.

Most of the thirteen greyhounds suffered the “usual” fatal injuries – probably treatable – of broken legs caused by falls at track turns.

However, several disturbing deaths say a lot about how hard the dogs are being raced. Three died from cardiac arrests or a ruptured aorta; another greyhound sustained a lacerated carotid artery.

June also saw NSW continue its deadly trend as the worst state in 2021, with five deaths. For the first half of 2021, greyhound deaths in NSW increased by almost 50% over the same period in 2020.

  1. Absolutely heart breaking and sickening. These poor dogs have a very limited life time from the day they are born. I know money speaks louder than words …but WHY is this cruel and corrupt excuse of a sport allowed to exist. The cruelty is out there in the open for everybody to see. If the breeders had a skerrick of decency and duty of care towards these animals they wouldn’t be allowing this to happen. Better still ‘Ban Greyhound Racing FOREVER’
